The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, met with Senator Abdul-Azeez Yaradua at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday to deliberate on proposed amendments to Nigeria’s electoral laws.

According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the discussions focused primarily on the Electoral Reform Bill, which includes provisions for early voting opportunities for police officers and other security personnel assigned election duties.

During the meeting, Senator Yaradua presented the draft bill to the IGP, seeking professional input and institutional guidance to ensure the legislation aligns with the operational needs of security agencies during elections.

The proposed reforms aim to address longstanding challenges faced by security personnel who are often unable to vote due to deployment responsibilities on election days.

The Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, who was also present, commended the police chief for the improved security arrangements during recent off-cycle elections in Edo and Ondo States. Itodo noted that the Nigeria Police Force’s proactive strategies have contributed significantly to more peaceful and credible electoral processes. He also praised the IGP’s recent recognitions as evidence of his commitment to police reforms and professional leadership.

In response, IGP Egbetokun expressed appreciation for the stakeholders’ efforts toward electoral inclusivity and assured continued collaboration to enhance election security.

He reiterated the police force’s dedication to working with relevant partners to ensure transparent, fair, and violence-free elections across Nigeria. The meeting highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic processes through legal and operational improvements in election security management.
