Senate President Godswill Akpabio has returned to Nigeria after what his media office described as a brief vacation in London.
Upon his arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja early Monday morning, he dismissed widespread social media reports claiming he was critically ill and hospitalised abroad.
Akpabio, who landed at about 4:00 a.m., was welcomed by senators, aides, and supporters at the presidential wing of the airport. Addressing journalists, he refuted the rumours about his health, calling them “the imagination of the purveyors.” He stated, “There’s nothing like such. I’m fit as a fiddle. I only stopped over in London for a short vacation.”
The 62-year-old Senate President had earlier attended the sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 29 to 31, before travelling to the United Kingdom. He highlighted the active role played by the Nigerian delegation at the conference, particularly in advocating for stronger democratic governance and better cooperation between different arms of government.
Akpabio assured Nigerians of a productive legislative session when the National Assembly reconvenes, saying, “We promise robust legislative engagements when the Senate resumes from recess.”
Prior to his return, Senator Gbenga Daniel, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, had also denied reports of Akpabio’s ill health during a meeting with him in London. Daniel remarked, “Your excellency, the news out there is that you have been indisposed, but seeing you here now paints a very different picture.”
Akpabio, who was elected Senate President in June 2023, previously served as governor of Akwa Ibom State and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs. His return puts to rest speculations about his health while reaffirming his commitment to legislative duties.
