The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that more than 13 million social media accounts have been suspended for violating the national code of practice on offensive content.
These accounts were removed from major platforms, including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X, formerly known as Twitter. The details were disclosed in a compliance report submitted by promoters of interactive computer service platforms such as Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.
The regulatory framework, known as the Code of Practice, was issued jointly by the Nigerian Communications Commission, the National Information Technology Development Agency, and the National Broadcasting Commission.
According to a statement from Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications, the enforcement actions also resulted in the removal of 58,909,112 individual pieces of offensive content from various platforms.
The report further indicated that 754,629 user complaints were registered across these platforms during the reporting period. Following user appeals, a total of 420,439 pieces of content that had been initially taken down were subsequently restored after review.
Umar specifically commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their compliance with the code of practice for interactive computer service platforms.
The government described the submission of these compliance reports as a significant step toward creating a safer and more responsible digital environment for Nigerian users.
The initiative is part of broader measures that require large service platforms to register in Nigeria and comply with relevant national laws, including tax obligations.
While acknowledging the progress made, NITDA emphasised that building a secure digital space requires continued collaboration and engagement among all stakeholders, including industry players, civil society, and regulatory partners. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening user safety measures, enhancing digital literacy, and promoting trust in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
