Lagos State Government has issued a strong condemnation of a recent violent assault on its Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) that occurred at the Mile 2 area of the state.
The government has vowed to ensure that all individuals responsible for the attack are apprehended and made to face the full consequences of the law.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, articulated this position in an official statement released on Thursday, characterising the incident as a grievous, appalling, and utterly unacceptable act.
Commissioner Osiyemi expressed the government’s profound indignation upon receiving reports of the vicious assault, which took place while the officers were carrying out their lawful duties.
He stated that the attack represents not only a direct personal affront to the individual officers involved but also a blatant challenge to the authority and dignity of the Lagos State Government itself. He assured that such criminal behaviour would not be tolerated and promised it would never go unpunished.
The Commissioner went on to emphasise the important legal mandate given to VIO personnel, who act as official agents of the state entrusted with the critical task of ensuring road safety and protecting the lives of all citizens.
He issued a stern warning that any attempt to intimidate or physically obstruct these officers constitutes a serious attack on the rule of law and public order.
While disclosing that the injured officers are currently receiving medical treatment, Osiyemi stressed that the gravity of the incident remains undiminished. He concluded by assuring all government personnel of the state’s unwavering support and its commitment to guaranteeing their safety and dignity as they perform their official responsibilities.
