Former Super Eagles Star Friday Ekpo Remains Optimistic About Nigeria’s World Cup Hopes

Former Nigerian midfielder Friday Ekpo remains steadfast in his belief that the Super Eagles can still qualify for the 2026 World Cup, despite a challenging position in their qualifying group.

His optimism persists even after the team’s recent 1-1 draw against South Africa in Bloemfontein, a result many analysts and fans believe has severely dented Nigeria’s chances.

Following the match, the standings show South Africa firmly at the top of Group C with 17 points. Benin Republic sits in second place with 14 points, while the Super Eagles trail in third with just 11 points, with only two matches remaining in the qualifying series.

Friday Ekpo stated that it would take until the final day of the qualifiers for him to believe that Nigeria will not be travelling to the tournament in Mexico, Canada, and the United States next year. He emphasized that the team’s hope is not yet over.

The former star outlined the path to qualification, stating that the most important immediate task is for the Super Eagles to win their two remaining games against Benin Republic and Lesotho in October.

Furthermore, the team must hope that results in other groups go their way, with other nations failing to achieve higher point totals that could secure a berth as one of the best runners-up.

Friday Ekpo concluded by reaffirming his faith, insisting that the draw against South Africa does not eliminate Nigeria from the race.

He maintains his optimistic outlook that the West African football powerhouse will secure a place at football’s biggest showpiece event.
