Former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), has paid glowing tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as an exceptional patriot and statesman who made significant contributions to Nigeria’s development.
In an emotional statement, Abubakar expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s passing while accepting it as the divine will of Allah.
“The death of President Buhari is indeed painful, but as Muslims, we submit to Allah’s will. We have lost an honest, sincere leader and a true patriot at a crucial time in our nation’s history,” Abubakar stated.
The former leader emphasised how Buhari would be profoundly missed not just by his immediate family, but by all Nigerians whose lives he touched through his selfless service.
Abubakar particularly highlighted Buhari’s unwavering commitment to fighting corruption, noting that this was a consistent theme throughout both his military regime and democratic administration.
He praised the late president’s implementation of impactful anti-graft measures that helped reshape Nigeria’s governance landscape. The former Head of State also commended Buhari as a detribalized leader who worked tirelessly to foster national unity and build consensus across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious divides.
In his tribute, Abubakar offered prayers for divine mercy, asking Allah to forgive Buhari’s shortcomings and grant him eternal rest among the righteous in Aljannah Firdaus.
He also prayed for strength for the bereaved family and the entire nation to bear the loss. The statement concluded with the traditional Islamic reflection: “From God we came, and to Him we shall all return,” underscoring the transient nature of human life.
