The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, has raised an alarm over the illegal collection of fees from motorists by unauthorised individuals in Ohafia Local Government Area and other parts of the state.
Emetu expressed concern about recent reports of extortion, including an incident where two persons were assaulted by youths from Ebem Ohafia in reaction to the fraudulent activities.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Chukwudi Eke Mba, the Deputy Governor strongly condemned the practice, clarifying that the Abia State government has not authorised any person or group to collect levies on its behalf without proper documentation from the State Board of Internal Revenue.
He emphasised that such actions not only breach the law but also erode public trust in the government.
Emetu directed the Abia State Taskforce Team in Ohafia to intensify efforts in curbing illegal revenue collection, urging them to reinforce their presence in the field and uphold principles of transparency and accountability.
He also called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious fee collection activities to the authorities, warning that extortion would not be tolerated.
The Deputy Governor’s statement follows growing complaints about intimidation by fake revenue agents in Ohafia and other areas. The government’s reaffirmation of its stance against illegal collections aims to protect citizens from exploitation while ensuring that legitimate revenue processes remain orderly and lawful. Authorities have vowed to prosecute offenders as part of measures to sanitise the state’s revenue system.
