The Abia State government has announced plans to crack down on the state’s producers of fake drugs and beverages.
The move follows the recent action by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), which sealed duplexes used for repackaging expired drugs in Osisioma Local Government Area last week.
In a briefing to journalists after this week’s executive council meeting, which was presided over by Governor Alex Otti, Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, issued a stern warning to the producers and marketers of fake products.
He condemned the illegal activities, highlighting that they were tarnishing the state’s reputation.
Kanu further emphasized that the state government is committed to taking robust enforcement measures to eliminate the illicit trade, with security agencies to be deployed to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
In addition to the crackdown on fake products, Kanu also addressed the issue of illegal traders in Umuahia.
He revealed that plans are underway to relocate these traders to the Okwulaga Afara relief market.
Compensation for the landowners has already been paid, and construction of the new market is currently in progress, he said.
