AFCON Winner Asserts: ‘Peseiro Not the Answer’ for Super Eagles’

Former Super Eagles midfielder and AFCON 1994 winner, Edema Fuludu, has expressed skepticism about Nigeria’s chances in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast. In an exclusive interview with Soccernet.ng, Fuludu questioned the suitability of head coach Jose Peseiro, citing lack of commitment, distrust in home-based players, and recent poor results as impediments to Nigeria’s success.

Fuludu, a former Julius Berger FC ace, emphasized that highly rated players do not consider the Super Eagles as favorites and suggested the need for a psychologist to address complacency among the squad. Despite being drawn in Group A with hosts Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau, Fuludu believes Nigeria cannot overcome the challenges under Peseiro’s leadership.

The AFCON-winning midfielder’s critical assessment raises concerns about Nigeria’s ability to compete against formidable rivals like reigning champions Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Cameroon, and hosts Ivory Coast.

As the tournament approaches, Fuludu’s remarks add a layer of doubt to Nigeria’s prospects, emphasizing the pivotal role of coaching and psychological preparation in the team’s pursuit of continental glory.
