The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has reiterated its dedication to fostering accountability, transparency, and sustainable fiscal management in local government administration nationwide.
Speaking at a collaborative meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, ALGON National President Hon. Bello Yandaki emphasized the association’s commitment to enhancing governance at the grassroots level. The meeting, held in partnership with the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE), focused on advancing best practices in rural governance and improving local government capacity.
Hon. Yandaki highlighted ALGON’s ongoing multisectoral engagements aimed at strengthening the operational effectiveness of the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across Nigeria. He commended PACE for its role in initiating programs that address key governance challenges, particularly in budgeting and fiscal management.
“The meeting’s framework and budgeting process aim to provide clear guidance on avoiding pitfalls and ensuring transparent administration by LGA officers to deliver excellent services, hence its essence,” Yandaki stated.
He also acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu in revitalizing local government systems, noting that such backing has enhanced administrative processes at the grassroots.
The ALGON president further pointed to partnerships with organizations like MSH, USAID, UNICEF, and PACE, which have contributed significantly to capacity-building efforts. These include training programs, effective budgeting techniques, and robust auditing practices.
Yandaki reaffirmed ALGON’s commitment to ensuring that local governments deliver quality services to citizens while maintaining high standards of transparency and fiscal responsibility.
