Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced its intention to appeal the judgment of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, which acquitted and discharged former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose in a N6.9 billion fraud case.
The anti-graft agency disclosed this in a statement released on its official social media platform on Wednesday.
The court, presided over by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, ruled on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, dismissing all charges against Fayose in the long-standing money laundering case filed by the EFCC.
The commission, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, stating that it is currently reviewing the ruling and preparing to challenge the decision at a higher court.
Fayose was initially re-arraigned on July 2, 2019, alongside Spotless Investment Limited, on an 11-count charge related to money laundering and alleged theft of N6.9 billion. The case, which has spanned several years, has been a focal point in the EFCC’s efforts to combat high-profile corruption in Nigeria.
In its statement, the EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing justice in the matter, emphasising that the decision to appeal aligns with its mandate to uphold accountability and the rule of law. The commission did not provide further details on the specific grounds for the appeal but assured the public of its determination to ensure that the case is thoroughly examined by the appellate court.
The ruling has sparked mixed reactions, with supporters of Fayose celebrating the verdict as a vindication, while critics await the outcome of the EFCC’s appeal. The case remains a significant legal battle in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
