Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has set ambitious targets for Scotland ahead of Euro 2024, aiming to make history by progressing past the group stage for the first time in a major tournament.

Having secured qualification for a second consecutive European Championships, Scotland faces a tough opening match against hosts Germany in Munich on Friday, June 14. Hungary and Switzerland complete Group A alongside Steve Clarke’s squad.

Reflecting on Scotland’s performance in Euro 2020, where they secured only one point from a draw against England, Robertson emphasized the significance of reaching the knockout stages this time around.

“Our aim is to be the team that creates history,” Robertson declared. “We have to aim to get out of the group, that has to be our aim.”

Acknowledging the challenges posed by their group opponents, Robertson expressed confidence in Scotland’s ability to compete. “We believe that we can give any team a game, and if we manage to get out of the group, then we’re the first Scotland team to ever do that,” he added.

Robertson highlighted Scotland’s efforts to carve out their own legacy within a nation rich in football history. “We’ve been trying to create our own history, our own story within a nation that has had a lot of good teams in the past, a lot of legends of the game,” he explained.

Securing qualification for two consecutive tournaments marks a significant achievement for Scotland, but Robertson emphasized the importance of taking the next step. “To qualify from the group would be a massive step and would excel us even further, giving us even more belief than we’ve already got,” he concluded.
