The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar have submitted an order allowing live broadcasts of the daily court proceedings in a lawsuit filed against President-elect Bola Tinubu, starting today.
In a motion by his legal team, led by Chris Uche, SAN, he specifically called for “An order directing the Court’s Registry and the parties on modalities for admission of Media Practitioners and their Equipment into the courtroom.”
Atiku, a two-time presidential candidate for the PDP, said the petition was a matter of national and public interest.
Atiku’s Legal Team stated that the case concerns citizens and voters of 36 states and the international community. They also mentioned that the electoral process in Nigeria had piqued the interest of both the international and national community. In their motion, they are also contending that;
With the vast and tremendous technological advances and developments in Nigeria and beyond, including the current trend by this court towards embracing electronic procedures, virtual hearing and electronic filing, a departure from the rules to allow a regulated televising of the proceedings in this matter aligns with the maxim that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.
Televising court proceedings is not alien to this court and will enhance public confidence.
