Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, spokesperson for the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has criticised political coalitions in Nigeria, asserting that they are often motivated by personal ambitions rather than the national interest.
Speaking at a colloquium organised by the Democratic Watch Initiative in Kaduna, Baba-Ahmed expressed concern that many politicians enter office seeking power for its own sake, without a clear understanding of the country’s challenges.
He pointed out that during the 2023 general elections, some state governors lobbied for Bola Tinubu’s presidency not out of regional solidarity but to secure ministerial positions.
Baba-Ahmed emphasised that such actions undermine the democratic process and distract from addressing the nation’s pressing issues.
The NEF spokesperson also highlighted the prevalence of identity politics, noting that religion and ethnicity are often exploited during elections to garner votes.
He argued that this approach diverts attention from the real needs of the populace and fosters division.
Baba-Ahmed’s remarks underscore the necessity for political leaders to prioritise the well-being of the nation over personal gain.
He called for a shift towards leadership that is rooted in integrity and a genuine commitment to public service.
