Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has expressed concerns over the implications of the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket adopted in the last general election by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
He believes this decision has set a precedent that could make it challenging for Nigerians to oppose a future Christian-Christian ticket.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Babachir Lawal stated, “It has opened a Pandora’s box. Somebody can now come out with a Christian-Christian ticket, and Nigerians will find it very difficult to oppose it because a precedent has been set.”
He emphasised that his concerns are not solely based on religious considerations but also on the principle of equity. “There needs to be equity in what we do. If we don’t, we suffer the consequences that we are doing now because we have not shown equity,” he added.
Babachir Lawal further criticised the current administration’s approach, suggesting that the nation is experiencing repercussions due to perceived imbalances in representation.
“When the leader decides to practice evil, the society suffers. And that is part of the reason why we are where we are now,” he remarked.
Babachir Lawal also highlighted the importance of regional balance in governance, stating that people must feel a sense of belonging to contribute effectively to national development.
“It’s not about the ticket alone, but also our regional balances. People must feel they have a sense of belonging before they can put their energy into working to develop and unite the country,” Babachir Lawal concluded.
