Terseer Ugbor, the lawmaker representing Kwande/Ushongo federal constituency in Benue State, has revealed that armed Fulani herdsmen have now occupied 40 percent of the state’s farmlands.

Ugbor made this disclosure during an interactive session with journalists on Monday.

The lawmaker expressed serious concern over a recent surge in attacks by Fulani militias, which have resulted in the deaths and displacement of several residents in Kwande Local Government Area.

He further highlighted that investigations have shown that much of the state’s arable farmlands are under the control of Fulani bandits.

He warned that this occupation is exacerbating food insecurity in Benue and Nigeria as a whole, with over 40 percent of the region’s fertile lands now occupied.

Ugbor also recalled the deadly attack by Fulani herdsmen on Christmas Day in 2024 in Kwande, a border community with Cameroon.

He described the situation as dire, noting that the bandits even went so far as to attack an immigration outpost—the only security presence in the area—and set it on fire.

The lawmaker emphasized that the worsening security situation poses a grave threat to the livelihoods of the people in Benue State and the country at large.
