Benue State House of Assembly states that, in the best interests of all candidates, it has lifted the ban on the State Universal Basic Education Board’s (SUBEB) hiring process.

Following the completion of its mandate, the Ad-Hoc Committee looking into the Board’s recruitment of primary school teachers came up with this resolution.

According to Cephas Dyako (LP/Konshisha), the committee chairman, SUBEB was authorized by Section 7,1(b) of the Law to Provide for the Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education and for Purposes Connected Therewith, 2018 to hire, promote, and discipline teaching and non-teaching staff on grade levels 07 and up.

A total of 74,574 individuals applied for the position, 48,895 took the Computer-Based Test (CBT), and 7,224 were included on the shortlist for the oral interview, he said.

According to Dyako, each local government area’s cutoff marks were assigned based on performance to prevent some local governments with high-performance levels from dominating the recruiting process.

He continued by saying that, according to the Board’s needs assessment, Makurdi and Ohimini LGAs received 144 and 126 candidates, respectively, the only two local governments to have less than 200 people shortlisted for the oral interview thus far.

The head of the committee also mentioned that because the hiring process had been halted, 2,476 applicants had not yet been selected.

He said that candidates did not initially represent the character of the state since they were not selected based on their local government of origin.
