Benue: Catholic Church closes over 15 parishes due to herdsmen attacks

The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi in Benue State has shut down more than 15 churches due to a wave of violent attacks by suspected armed herdsmen on local communities.

This announcement was made by Reverend Father Joseph Beba, Chairman of the Nigerian Catholic Diocesan Priests Association (NCDPA) in Makurdi, during a press briefing at the Catholic Cathedral.

Father Beba revealed that several communities, including Tse Orbiam, Ahume, Jimba, Nagi-Camp, Aondoana, Yelewata, and Abegana, have suffered coordinated assaults over the past two weeks.

These attacks have led to the deaths of more than 50 residents, including women and children. In severely affected areas such as Jimba, Mbalom Yelewata, and Aondoana, priests and parishioners have been forced to flee, leading to the closure of the parishes.

He suggested that the increase in violence may be connected to the recent testimony of Bishop Wilfred Anagbe of the Makurdi Diocese, who spoke internationally about the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Father Beba believes the attacks are a direct retaliation against the bishop’s statements abroad, saying the Church is now under siege.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Catholic Diocesan Priests Association also criticised the lack of action by security forces. On May 24, Reverend Father Solomon Atongo was attacked near Naka, only a short distance from an army checkpoint, yet there was no response from the military.

Calling for urgent intervention, Father Beba appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia to take firm action against the armed herdsmen and protest Nigerians and churches. He further urged local youths to remain vigilant and defend their communities, asserting that self-defence is an inalienable right.
