Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the recent massacre in Benue State, describing the violence as a “national tragedy” that demands immediate government intervention.
The attack, which claimed numerous lives in a rural community, has sparked renewed outrage over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.
Atiku expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that no Nigerian should have to live in constant fear of such brutal violence. He criticised the federal government’s handling of security matters, arguing that the persistent killings across the country reflect a failure of leadership. The former presidential candidate urged authorities to deploy all necessary resources to protect vulnerable communities and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Benue massacre is the latest in a series of deadly attacks targeting farming communities, with armed groups suspected to be herdsmen blamed for the violence. Atiku called for a comprehensive strategy to address the root causes of these conflicts, including improved intelligence gathering, community policing, and dialogue between stakeholders. He also emphasised the need for better welfare and equipment for security personnel to enhance their effectiveness.
Political and civil society groups have joined Atiku in demanding decisive action, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the government’s perceived lack of action. The former vice president’s statement adds to growing calls for accountability and a reassessment of the country’s security architecture.
The government has yet to issue a detailed response regarding its plans to prevent future attacks.
