Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, a controversial cross-dresser, has filed an appeal against the six-month jail sentence issued by the Federal High Court in Lagos after he was convicted on naira abuse charges.
Bobrisky’s lawyer, Bimbo Kusanu, filed an appeal on his behalf, requesting that the six-month incarceration be converted to a N50,000 fine on each of the four offences for which he was convicted.
On April 12, 2024, Justice Abimbola Awogboro condemned Bobrisky to six months in prison without the option of a fine for abusing the naira by spraying it during a party, resulting in mutilation.
On April 5, 2024, Bobrisky pled guilty to four charges of naira misuse brought against him by the EFCC.
The court, when sentencing the cross-dresser, stated that the decision will serve as a deterrence to those who like abusing and mutilating the body.
However, in his Notice of Appeal filed with the Appeal Court, the cross-dresser requested the appeal court to consider the fact that he had no prior criminal convictions.
He argued that the trial court’s sentence against him was severe and violated the Administration of Criminal Justice Law’s obligatory sentencing clauses.
He added that the trial court ignored the appellant’s good antecedent, which did not squander the trial court’s valuable judicial resources by pleading guilty to the charge.
