The controversy involving Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, a well-known crossdresser, has been characterized by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as a reflection of the nation’s institutional problems.
On Tuesday’s episode of Politics Today on Channels Television, Tunji-Ojo made this statement.
Recall how Bobrisky’s prison sentence for abusing naira has gotten him entangled in a scandal.
In a widely shared recording, the transvestite said that she had bribed some Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) officers to receive preferential treatment while at prison.
The episode that has dominated discussions for months, according to the interior ministry, is a manifestation of institutional problems.
He said:
“When you have an institutional problem, you don’t just provide a knee-jerk approach to solving it.
“We set up that committee to look into all the issues, beyond Bobrisky, beyond people absconding – it is a whole institutional issue.”
According to him, the best approach to addressing such problems that could arise in the future is to change Nigeria’s institutions.
Minister Tunji-Ojo points out that “we cannot transfer today’s problem to the future.”
