Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s frugal eating habits during his eight-year administration have been disclosed by his former spokesman, Garba Shehu.
In his newly released book, “Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience,” Shehu recounted how Buhari insisted on modest meals typical of Nigeria’s lower-income households rather than extravagant presidential cuisine.
The revelation stems from an incident shortly after Buhari assumed office in 2015, when he rejected a proposed N10 million food budget for the presidency. “When they told him N10 million was needed, he screamed and demanded it be reduced,” Shehu wrote.
The former president reportedly challenged the expenditure by pointing to his simple dining preferences: “Look at my table, what do I eat? How much does it cost?”
According to the former media aide, Buhari consistently consumed basic Nigerian staples including tuwo (a grain-based dough), akara (bean cakes), beans, wheat porridge, and pap – a cornmeal cereal. His diet also included generous portions of salads, poultry, and mutton. These food choices reflected both his taste and his reputation for austere living, a characteristic that defined his public image throughout his political career.
