Parents have been urged to encourage their children’s strengths, objectives, and aspirations rather than pushing their preferred vocation on them.
According to a Joblist poll from 2021, 48% of participants thought that their parents had a significant effect on their job path, while over 40% felt forced to follow their parents’ recommendations.
Typically, this has resulted in discontent and unfulfillment among children.
Mr Adeyemi Ajayeoba, an educationist, said that while this may prevent children from achieving their ambitions, it can also ruin their future.
Ajayeoba spoke at Great Standard Montessori Model School’s graduation ceremony in Abeokuta.
He said:
“Don’t destroy the future of your children, because some parents want their own desire to prevail. There are some children who want to be a teacher but most parents will tell them ‘No, I want to have a doctor, I want an Army General in the home’, discouraging that child from becoming what he or she desire in life.
“If your child has chosen the part of becoming a teacher, a lawyer or whatsoever career, let us encourage them as parents.”
