Honourable Obukoadata Aghoghofia, a serving councillor representing Evwreni Ward 8 in the Ughelli North Legislative Council of Delta State, has tragically passed away after collapsing during a football match.
The incident occurred on June 3, 2025, during a community football competition in Evwreni. His sudden death has shocked residents and left the local government in mourning.
According to eyewitnesses, Aghoghofia was actively participating in the game when he unexpectedly slumped on the field. Immediate efforts were made to revive him, but he was pronounced dead shortly after.
The cause of death has not been officially confirmed, but many believe it may have been related to a sudden medical condition. His passing marks the third time in just over nine months that a councillor has died while in office in Delta State, including two from Ughelli North and one from Emede Ward 5 in Isoko South.
Olorogun Jaro Egbo, chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, expressed profound sadness over the loss.
In a public statement, he recalled meeting Aghoghofia just hours before the incident, praising his dedication to legislative work and community service.
Egbo described the councillor as a passionate and accomplished legislator whose contributions to the council’s 8th Assembly would be deeply missed.
The community is preparing to pay tribute to Aghoghofia, with plans underway for memorial services.
The councillor’s death has also sparked calls for increased health screening and emergency support at public events to prevent similar tragedies.
