Cross River Assembly condemns call for delisting of Bakassi LGA

Cross River State House of Assembly has condemned the actions of the former chairman of Bakassi Local Government Area, Chief Amboni Iyadim, and a group of other politicians, labelling their actions as a treasonable felony, which could potentially carry the death penalty.

The lawmakers reacted to a petition signed by Iyadim and others, which was submitted to President Bola Tinubu under the banner of the Indigenous Displaced People of Bakassi communities.

The petition called for Bakassi’s delisting from the 774 local government areas of Nigeria, a move that has sparked significant tension in the Bakassi region.

The House criticized the group for bypassing state authorities and failing to consult with Governor Bassey Otu before making such a move.

Speaker Elvert Ayambem stated that the House would summon Iyadim and the other signatories to explain their actions. He added that if they failed to appear, the Assembly would issue arrest warrants.

Ayambem condemned the petition as “a complete misnomer and facade,” stressing that attempts to politicize or blackmail the state over sensitive issues would not derail the ongoing development of Cross River.

He reiterated that the state belongs to all its people and that no single local government is more significant than another. “No atom of self-interest will derail the progress the state is witnessing,” Ayambem declared, affirming that Cross River is on the right path.
