Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is reportedly set to purchase a French Ligue 2 team, Valenciennes FC. The CEO of the Dangote Group, the biggest industrial conglomerate in West Africa, would acquire the club’s 60% ownership.
Dangote had tried to buy a controlling share in Arsenal in 2010, but his bid was unsuccessful. However, if the media claims are genuine, this team will surely pull through.
The club, which was established in 1913, plays its home matches at the recently built Stade du Hainault and has a lengthy history of winning the Ligue 2, the Championnat National, and the Championnat de France Amateur.
The Athenians have never won the Ligue 1 title but have claimed the Ligue 2 title on two occasions.
Valenciennes have also played in the French Cup final once. They currently occupy 15th position on the Ligue 2 table.
