Delta State High Court in Warri has ordered Nigerian universities and JAMB to admit all 2024 UTME applicants who passed the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination particularly those who would turn 16 between September 1st and December 31st, 2025.
The Delta court ordered colleges to enable students to continue classes immediately awaiting the outcome of a dispute brought before it.
On Friday, the Court presided over by Justice A.O. Akpovi issued the ruling in suit No. W/311/FH, emphasizing that all UTME candidates of Nigerian universities are affected and obligated by it.
The order barred the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, from taking further action on and/or implementing the directives affecting UTME students contained in its circular of October 16, 2024, titled “Admission of Candidates With Minimum Admissible Age of 16 Years,” pending the hearing and resolution of an originating motion.
During the hearings in suit No: W/311/FHR/2024 between John O. Aikpokpo-Martins and JAMB as first respondent and Edwin Clark University as second respondent, Aikpokpo-Martins attended in person, while O. Mohammed SAN and S.P. Siketi represented JAMB.
Dr. Wahab Oyedekun, Director Legal, also represented JAMB, while A Bekeredemo appeared on behalf of Edwin Clark University.
John Aikpokpo-Martins informed the court that various processes were before it, including a motion to condemn the Registrar of JAMB and the Registrar of Edwin Clark University to jail for violation of the court’s orders made on October 24, 2024.
