The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) elected President Bola Tinubu as its Chairman.

On Sunday afternoon, in the capital of Guinea-Bissau, Bissau, the regional bloc’s 63rd Ordinary Session took place, appointing Tinubu as its chairman.

The outgoing chairman, Umaro Embaló, President of Guinea-Bissau, handed over the necessary paperwork to the Nigerian leader, who declared, “We will take democracy seriously; Democracy is very tough, but it is the form of government,”

Member countries elect their head of state or government, rotating to serve as the ECOWAS Chairman for one year. Former Nigerian President Buhari held the role from 2018 to 2019.

Although the position does not grant administrative authority, the Chairman engages in advocacy, plays a strategic role in resolving disputes, and communicates with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, the executive in charge of managing and carrying out ECOWAS policies and decisions daily.
