Mahmud Lawal, a member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly representing the Zaria constituency, has called ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s decision to seek legal action over claims of misappropriation of N432 billion “laughable”.
Speaking to journalists in Kaduna, Lawal expressed dismay with El-Rufai’s newfound interest in the courts after years of neglect.
He noted that El-Rufai appears to have easily forgotten the idea of separation of powers entrenched in the constitution, which requires non-interference between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
“Does he (El-Rufai) believe that by resorting to legal action, he can obstruct the legislature from carrying out its constitutional duties?”
The legislator stated that Kaduna State had never seen such obvious exploitation of public monies as under El-Rufai’s tenure, “where funds were misappropriated under the guise of project implementation”.
He indicated that the reported expenses were vastly disproportionate to the actual job completed.
He said:
“For instance, let me illustrate what occurred at Kofar Doka in Zaria, my constituency. Billions of Naira were purportedly allocated for road projects, but tragically, the only visible activity was bulldozers demolishing people’s homes, rendering them homeless.”
