EPL: PFA to take action on ‘bomb squads’ as Maresca bans 13 Chelsea players

The Professional Football Association (PFA) is keeping a tight eye on ‘bomb squads’, which are used to compel players to quit teams.

Clubs are starting to exclude players from the main group if they are regarded as surplus to requirements.

Chelsea, for example, have instructed Raheem Sterling, Trevor Chalobah, and Ben Chilwell to practice apart from the first squad after Enzo Maresca judged the three surplus to needs.

At least 13 players have been cut from Maresca’s squad.

It is understood that FIFA instruction has been sent to all clubs, and the PFA is monitoring the issue.

FIFA and PFA have several protections in place for clubs and players, and the governing body, FIFA’S 2022 statutes handbook states that the FIFA council has the authority to “regulate the status of players and the provisions for their transfer, as well as questions relating to these matters, in particular the encouragement of player training by clubs and the protections of representative teams in form of special regulations from time to time”.

It is thought that FIFA provides key guidelines on player treatment, which is based on employment law rather than league rules.
