Nyesom Wike, the Minister, has been urged by the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory to give the protection of people and property top priority in the nation’s capital.
The Committee also urged him to focus his efforts, contacts, and expertise on increasing revenue generation to fund the FCT’s infrastructure development.
The chairman of the House Committee on FCT made these suggestions at the panel’s first meeting in Abuja, Muktar Betara.
The lawmaker stressed that the committee could not afford to fail the FCT’s natives and residents in the task assigned to them, even as she urged members to commit their time and efforts to implementing President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He enumerated the committee’s oversight responsibilities with regard to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and its agencies, such as the Abuja Metropolitan Management Authority, the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), the Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS), the Abuja Investment Company Ltd., the FCT Mass Housing Department, and the FCT Pension Board.
In addition, he expanded the Committee’s oversight duties to include planning and development for the FCT, secondary and postsecondary education, public transportation, and the annual budget estimate of the FCTA.
According to him:
“Abuja is losing revenue but this Committee will support the Minister to ensure that he gets more revenue for the development of infrastructure in the FCT.
“The Minister has assured us that he will make Abuja work and generate more revenue. Most of the estates in Abuja don’t have title documents but the Minister has promised to look into this. With the right commitment, documents can be concluded within 14 days.”
