The Federal Government has confirmed an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in Kano State.
The virus, which affects various bird species including layers, ducks, guinea fowls, and turkeys, has sparked concerns over its potential spread across Nigeria’s northern region.
In a circular, the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, Dr. Columba Teru Vakuru, warned of the heightened risk of transmission and called for immediate action.
“We urge all state veterinary offices and relevant agencies to activate their surveillance systems immediately. Strict biosecurity measures must be implemented, and public awareness campaigns intensified to curb the spread of the virus,” the circular stated.
Bird Flu outbreak reportedly began in December 2024 when a young man in Galadanchi quarters, Gwale Local Government Area, purchased a duck from Janguza market in Tofa LGA.
According to Dr. Usman Gwarzo, Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Kano State chapter, the duck died suddenly, followed by the deaths of chickens in the same flock.
Suspecting avian influenza, veterinary officials collected samples, which were sent for testing. By the first week of January 2025, laboratory results confirmed the presence of the virus.
Dr. Gwarzo has urged Kano residents to remain vigilant, report any unusual bird deaths to veterinary authorities, and adhere to biosecurity guidelines.
