The Nigerian government has announced an initiative to build affordable housing units using bamboo as a primary construction material, targeting low-income earners across the country.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development revealed the plan as part of the administration’s efforts to address the nation’s housing deficit through sustainable and cost-effective solutions.
Officials explained that bamboo was selected due to its durability, environmental sustainability, and cost efficiency compared to conventional building materials.
The project aligns with global trends in eco-friendly construction while providing an answer to Nigeria’s estimated 28 million housing unit shortage. Pilot schemes will begin in select states before nationwide implementation, with each housing unit designed to be both affordable and structurally sound.
The initiative also includes training programs for local builders in bamboo construction techniques, creating employment opportunities while developing new skills in the construction sector.
Government projections suggest the bamboo housing program could reduce construction costs by up to 30% compared to traditional methods, making home ownership more accessible to low-income families.
Housing experts have welcomed the initiative but emphasise the need for proper quality control and public education to overcome potential scepticism about bamboo’s durability.
The ministry has assured that all bamboo materials will undergo specialised treatment to ensure longevity and resistance to environmental factors.
