The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, was immediately suspended by President Bola Tinubu on Friday. Additionally, Tinubu asked Emefiele to immediately hand over control of his office to Mr Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate).
The president stated that Shonubi will serve as the CBN Governor in the interim until the inquiry and the changes are complete.
The acting governor of the CBN is profiled briefly below:
1. Shonubi was born On the 7th of March, 1962.
2. He has a double master’s degree from the University of Lagos, in mechanical engineering and business administration.
3. He is a banker with more than 30 years of experience, and from 2012 to 2018, he served as managing director and CEO of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System PLC.
4. Shonubi previously held the positions of Executive Director of Information Technology and Operations at Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Member of the Board of Directors at Union Homes, and Director of Information Technology and Corporate Services at Renaissance Securities Nigeria Limited, where he was in charge of the IT infrastructure for the Group in Africa.
5. From 1999 to 2007, he served as MBC International’s deputy general manager. He also held vice president positions at First City Monument Bank Limited and as Executive Director, at Ecobank Nigeria Limited.
