Retired Major General I.B.M. Haruna, former Federal Commissioner for Information and Culture, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as an exemplary leader and patriot.
Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, Haruna praised Buhari as a distinguished figure among Nigeria’s past leaders, emphasising his unwavering commitment to national development and stability.
“We have lost a great son of the soil, a visionary leader who dedicated himself to the progress of Nigeria and the well-being of its people,” Haruna stated. He reflected on Buhari’s contributions to peace and nation-building, acknowledging his integrity and service despite their limited personal interactions during their military careers.
Haruna clarified that their paths did not cross during active service, as Buhari served in the 1st Division during the civil war alongside General Muhammad Shuwa, while he himself commanded the 2nd Division under General Murtala Muhammad in Onitsha. “By the time Buhari rose to prominence, I had already retired in 1977 as Federal Commissioner for Information and Culture,” he explained. However, he noted that he later became familiar with Buhari’s leadership through his role as Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum, where he engaged with northern stakeholders on national issues.
The retired general also recalled Buhari’s intervention during tensions in Nigeria’s South-West region, where he was deployed to assess and address underlying conflicts. Haruna’s tribute underscores Buhari’s enduring legacy as a stabilizing force in Nigerian politics and his dedication to fostering unity. As the nation mourns, Haruna’s remarks highlight the respect Buhari commanded across generations of Nigerian leaders.
