Bashir Ahmad, a former Digital Communications Assistant to former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has lodged a formal complaint with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface. The complaint stems from a comment made by Boniface that Ahmad found derogatory.
Boniface, who recently received a Golden Boot award as the joint top scorer of the Europa League last season, posted a video of the award on social media with the caption: “Aboki may think that it’s an iron.” This remark led to the controversy.
Ahmad expressed his concerns, stating that such comments have the potential to promote disunity, which contradicts the values of unity and diversity that Nigeria upholds. He emphasized the importance of national sports teams, including the Super Eagles, as unifying forces that transcend ethnic, religious, and regional differences.
In his complaint to the NFF, Ahmad urged the football federation to address the matter appropriately, calling for measures that reinforce unity within the nation.
Victor Boniface, who has been in excellent form this season with 10 goals and four assists in 12 games for Bayer Leverkusen, made his Super Eagles debut with an assist in the recent 2023 AFCON qualifiers. The NFF will now consider the complaint and decide on any actions to be taken regarding the “Aboki” comment.
