Academic staff at the Federal Polytechnic Offa in Kwara State have raised alarm over what they describe as the governing council’s disregard for institutional procedures, warning of potential industrial action.
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has accused the council of persistently holding meetings outside the polytechnic premises despite previous warnings.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the union’s branch chairman, Dr. Idowu Atilola, demanded the immediate cancellation of the council’s ongoing meeting in Lagos, describing the practice as a violation of established norms.
The union also called for a formal apology to the polytechnic community, citing the council’s alleged neglect of staff welfare and institutional development.
The statement highlighted growing frustration among academic staff, noting that the council had ignored several letters and requests for dialogue on critical issues.
It particularly criticised two council members, Engr. Kamoru Kadiri and Engr. Waheed Balogun, both former union leaders, for failing to guide the council appropriately. The registrar was also accused of compromising institutional rules for personal gain.
ASUP in Federal Polytechnic Offa warned that it would not tolerate further erosion of standards at the institution, emphasising its commitment to protecting the integrity of the polytechnic. The union urged the council to return to proper governance practices or face possible industrial unrest.
The development raises concerns about potential disruptions to academic activities if the dispute remains unresolved.
