Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed deep sorrow over the death of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, praising him as a courageous and selfless leader who dedicated his life to Nigeria’s progress.

In a heartfelt condolence message released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Okechukwu Eze, Jonathan described Buhari’s passing as a profound national loss.

Buhari, who died at the age of 82 in London on Sunday, was widely respected for his honesty, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the nation. Jonathan recalled that the late president’s integrity and service-oriented leadership earned him admiration from Nigerians across all walks of life.

“President Buhari was a notable leader, patriot, and elder statesman who served our beloved nation as both a military head of state and a civilian president to the best of his abilities,” Jonathan stated.

“He will be remembered as a courageous leader, a disciplined officer, and a committed public servant who made significant contributions to Nigeria’s peace and development.”

Reflecting on Buhari’s legacy, the former president highlighted his decency, integrity, and exemplary life of service. “As a leader, he was selfless, duty-bound, and served the country with character and deep patriotism,” Jonathan said. “In his passing, Nigeria has lost one of its foremost leaders, and I have lost a respected colleague and elder.”

Jonathan further emphasised that Buhari’s legacy would endure, particularly among those who value sacrifice, perseverance, and devotion to national ideals.

The tribute underscores the deep respect between the two former leaders, despite their political differences, and reflects the shared grief of a nation mourning the loss of a key figure in its history.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the country and beyond, Buhari’s death marks the end of an era, leaving Nigerians to reflect on his impact and the enduring principles he stood for.
