Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced a ₦1 billion donation to assist victims of the recent flood disaster in the Mokwa Local Government Area of the state.
The announcement was made during his visit to the affected communities of Tiffin-Maza and Anguwan Hausawa, where he personally assessed the extent of the damage and offered his condolences to the affected families.
During the visit, Governor Bago emphasised the need for residents to avoid building homes and structures near riverbanks and flood-prone areas. He stressed that such practices contribute significantly to the recurring floods and urged communities to adhere to proper urban planning guidelines.
The governor also revealed that his administration would construct permanent drainage systems and concrete bridges across Mokwa town to reduce the risk of future flooding.
He assured the public that all donations and support received from the federal government, private individuals, and international partners would be used transparently and strictly for the benefit of the flood victims.
In addition to immediate relief, Governor Bago reiterated the state government’s commitment to resettling those displaced by the flood. He called on Islamic teachers within the community to register their pupils to help ensure proper tracking and care, particularly during emergencies.
Governor Bago led prayers for those who lost their lives in the Mokwa flood and extended heartfelt condolences to grieving families. He praised the federal government for its support, which included ₦2 billion in relief funds and 20 trucks of food supplies to the state.
