Gov Otu accused of ignoring misconduct by close aides — PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has accused Governor Bassey Otu of deliberately ignoring acts of misconduct allegedly carried out by some of his close aides.

The party’s state chairman, Venatius Ikem, made these allegations during a recent interview with journalists in Calabar, expressing concern over what he described as the governor’s inaction in the face of troubling incidents.

Ikem specifically referred to the alleged assault of the managing director of the State Water Board by another government official.

He questioned the silence of the governor over the matter, suggesting that justice may be applied selectively based on ethnic or regional affiliations. He posed a rhetorical question about the safety of ordinary citizens in the state, implying that some individuals may be less protected due to their origin.

The PDP chairman also pointed to allegations involving a special assistant to the governor, who was reportedly collecting government revenues through personal and third-party accounts.

According to Ikem, despite public reports and media coverage of the incident, the governor has not taken any disciplinary action, which he said reflects a deeper issue of complacency and lack of accountability within the administration.

Ikem argued that under the current All Progressives Congress (APC) government, citizens are facing greater hardship than before. He compared the situation to a worse version of the previous administration, saying that while the people may have felt challenged under PDP rule, the APC has intensified their suffering.

He further stated that despite the APC’s efforts to pressure local leaders to defect to their party, the general population remains unconvinced. In areas such as the Northern Senatorial District, public sentiment suggests that the governor’s performance has not met expectations.
