In a groundbreaking move to enhance women’s inclusion in governance, Governor Muhammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has announced that all vice-chairmanship positions across the state’s 25 local government areas will be exclusively reserved for women in the upcoming elections.
Governor Bago highlighted the long-standing marginalization of women despite their immense contributions to society. He emphasized the necessity of female participation in leadership, describing women as key drivers of national progress and transformation.
“Empowering women at the grassroots isn’t just about fairness—it’s a strategic move for sustainable development across our state and the nation,” he stated.
Dismissing the notion that the initiative is merely about fulfilling quotas, the governor underscored the strength, resilience, and intelligence that women bring to governance. “When included in leadership, women bring balance, innovation, and fresh perspectives crucial for development,” he added.
A statement issued by his Special Adviser on Print Media, Aisha Wakaso, in Minna on Wednesday reaffirmed Bago’s commitment to breaking barriers for women in leadership and ensuring they take their rightful place in decision-making processes.
He called on all stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State to support the initiative, stressing that inclusivity must be central to the forthcoming local government elections.
