Govs don’t do anything meaningful, says Agbakoba in critique of state leadership

Senior Advocate of Nigeria Olisa Agbakoba has launched a scathing criticism against Nigeria’s state governors, accusing them of failing to deliver meaningful development to their states.

The prominent lawyer and former Nigerian Bar Association president expressed his frustration during a media interview, stating that most governors focus on political manoeuvring rather than addressing critical issues affecting citizens.

Agbakoba argued that despite receiving substantial federal allocations and internally generated revenues, many state governments have little to show in terms of infrastructure development, healthcare improvement, or educational advancement.

He particularly noted the poor state of roads, inadequate water supply, and failing public institutions across numerous states. The legal expert questioned why governors appear powerless when they control significant resources, suggesting that better management of state finances could dramatically improve living conditions.

The senior advocate also criticised what he described as an over-centralised federal system that makes states too dependent on Abuja.

However, he emphasised that governors must take greater responsibility for their jurisdictions by implementing innovative policies and demanding constitutional reforms that grant more autonomy to states.

Agbakoba called for stronger accountability measures to ensure governors deliver on their mandates, proposing regular performance assessments by civil society groups and professional bodies.

His comments come amid growing public dissatisfaction with governance at the state level, where many Nigerians complain of worsening economic conditions despite increased revenue allocations.

Agbakoba’s critique adds to ongoing debates about restructuring Nigeria’s federal system and improving governance delivery across all tiers of government.
