High Court restrains INEC from receiving petition to recall Natasha

The Federal High Court in Lokoja has issued an interim injunction barring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting petitions aimed at initiating a recall process against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The move to recall the suspended senator gained momentum on Thursday, with additional groups in Kogi Central expressing support for the process. However, a faction of Ebira indigenes dismissed claims that the recall effort was being influenced by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s political adversaries through financial inducements.

In its ruling on Thursday, the court also prohibited INEC officials, agents, and representatives from accepting or acting on petitions containing alleged fictitious signatures of purported members of the Kogi Central Senatorial District.

Also, the court barred the electoral body from conducting any referendum related to the recall until the motion on notice is determined.

According to the court order, made available to journalists on Friday morning, the injunction was granted following an ex-parte application supported by an affidavit citing extreme urgency.

The application was filed by Anebe Jacob Ogirima on behalf of himself and four other registered voters from the Kogi Central Senatorial District. It was moved by Smart Nwachimere, Esq., of West-Idahosa, SAN & Co.

The case has been adjourned until May 6, 2025, for a report on the service of the court order and further proceedings.
