Understand why screens are so hard to resist

Screens are designed to pull us in, the colours, the sounds, the quick thrills. For children, this is even more powerful. Too much time glued to a screen can affect their speech, sleep, and even how they connect with others. The first step as a parent is understanding these risks—and calmly helping your child understand them too.

Be the example they follow

Children imitate what they see. If you’re scrolling through your phone at dinner, don’t be surprised if your child does the same. Healthy habits begin with you. When you put your phone away, you teach your child that face-to-face moments are just as exciting as whatever is happening on a glowing screen.

Set boundaries and stick to them

Rules only work when they’re consistent. Decide how much screen time is reasonable (for younger children, one to two hours is enough), and be firm. Make mealtimes, car rides, and bedrooms screen-free zones. Invite your children to help create these rules, when they’re part of the decision, they’re more likely to follow through.

Show them the beauty of real life

Screens can’t replace fresh air, messy play, or the thrill of adventure. Take your children outdoors. Show them how fun it is to build things with their hands, dance to music in the living room, or read stories under a blanket fort. Stock your home with books, art supplies, board games, and puzzles, small things that spark big imaginations.

Build routines that make space for connection

Even with busy jobs and long commutes, families can create little rituals that pull everyone closer. Friday night dance-offs, Sunday market strolls, bedtime stories every evening, these routines don’t just reduce screen time, they weave memories that last.

Let them play outside

Children should run, jump, and play with other kids, not just sit tapping on screens. Enroll them in swimming lessons, let them kick a ball around with friends, or ride bikes together in the neighborhood. When you join in their games, you teach them that joy is found in movement and laughter, not just digital clicks.

Teach them to use technology wisely

Banning devices won’t prepare children for the future; teaching smart use will. Talk openly about online ads, how apps are designed to keep us hooked, and the difference between a real-life friend and an online stranger. Use alarms and visual cues to mark “screen stop times.” This way, your child learns to control technology, instead of being controlled by it.

Create screen-free zones and times

Morning hours, mealtimes, and the hour before bed can be screen-free moments. Replace them with reading, storytelling, or simply talking about the day. Visual schedules or fun charts can help children know when it’s time to unplug.

You don’t need to move your family to a faraway cabin or cut off all gadgets to raise healthy, happy children. What matters is balance. Swap some screen time for laughter, outdoor play, and creative messes that leave memories on your kitchen table.

One day, you’ll watch your child put down a tablet on their own—not because you forced them to, but because they’ve learned there’s a bigger, brighter world beyond the screen.
