Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, has ordered the closure of schools in Nnewi for a week due to the escalating tensions around Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s funeral.
The order was made in response to concerns about possible violence and claims that non-state actors threatened to disrupt the event if certain unsolved issues weren’t handled.
When gunmen stormed Nnewi on Wednesday night, murdering many people and burning a car, the situation worsened.
Around 7:30 p.m., the tragedy happened, causing widespread terror as locals ran for their lives.
With the funeral scheduled for Friday in Umuanuka village, Otolo Nnewi, the state government issued a circular on Thursday instructing all schools in the Nnewi zone to close till Tuesday next week. Parents were also asked to keep day pupils at home for their safety.
According to the circular, which was disseminated through school WhatsApp groups and claimed to be from the state Ministry of Education, school principals were asked to convey the closure to parents and warn pupils not to roam around in school uniforms during this period.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command denied reports relating the Nnewi attack to the burial. Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, a police spokesperson, confirmed that the assailants were not non-state actors, as previously claimed.
He stated that the community was safe and urged Nnewi inhabitants to go out of their responsibilities without fear.
