Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has honoured seven Super Falcons players of Imo origin with generous rewards following their triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Each player received a plot of land in a prime location in Owerri and a cash gift of N30 million in recognition of their outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s victory.

The governor made the announcement during a celebratory dinner held at the Government House Banquet Hall in Owerri, where he praised the players for their exceptional performance and dedication.

He emphasised that the gesture was part of the state’s efforts to celebrate and encourage excellence in sports.

The honoured players include goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, Jennifer Echegini, Tochukwu Oluchi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie, and Ifeoma Onumonu.

Uzodinma expressed pride in the fact that Imo State produced a significant number of players in the national team, including Africa’s top female goalkeeper. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting sports development and ensuring more Imo indigenes represent Nigeria at the highest levels of competition.

The governor also commended President Bola Tinubu for recognising and celebrating the Super Falcons’ achievement, noting that such gestures motivate athletes to excel.

He encouraged young girls and women in the state to pursue excellence in sports and other fields, assuring them of the government’s continued support.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Obinna Onyeocha, lauded Governor Uzodinma for his investments in sports and his dedication to fostering talent. The event was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and family members of the players, who joined in celebrating the athletes’ success.
