Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, has addressed claims made by governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial race was rigged.
The PDP governors asserted at a recent two-day conference in Jos, Plateau State, that Asue Ighodalo, the party’s candidate, was unable to win in Edo due to voting irregularities.
The recent Ondo election was allegedly rigged by INEC, according to the PDP governors.
They accused INEC of falsifying results to favour the APC and called on lawmakers and the courts to strengthen election rules to stop what they called “institutional sabotage of the will of the people.”
The INEC Chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, responded by calling the accusations “unfortunate and inappropriate,” stressing that INEC, as a law-abiding organization, is not permitted to comment on pending court issues.
Oyekanmi urged the PDP governors to provide their evidence in court rather than making unsupported statements in public and chastised them for participating in a “media trial.”
He noted that the PDP has petitioned the tribunal to challenge the results of the Edo State gubernatorial election and recommended that they present their arguments there.
