At least 14,000 schools in West and Central Africa have been shuttered because of violence and instability, according to the UN Aid Coordination Office.
UN stated that by June, 2.8 million children—many of whom are displaced—had been denied access to an education from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the east to Mali in the west.
The organization also stated that the most recent evaluations of aid point to a precarious humanitarian scenario in the area, with security events impacting schools increasing by an astonishing 103% between March and June of this year compared to the beginning of the year.
The UN relief office reports that the number of schools closing from March to June was somewhat more than it was during the preceding three-month period. Additionally, there were a few more internally displaced persons and refugees, which increased the strain on services.
It also noted that just around 25% of children in impacted regions had access to school in the most recent period under consideration, compared with one in two earlier in the year, underscoring the severe financing shortage that still plagues the humanitarian response.
