Governors from Nigeria’s Northwest region met with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, in a high-level security summit to address the worsening security situation across the region.

The closed-door meeting, held in Kaduna, focused on developing coordinated strategies to combat banditry, kidnapping, and terrorist activities that have plagued states like Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Sokoto.

The governors emphasised the need for enhanced military operations, improved intelligence sharing, and better coordination between security agencies and state governments. They also discussed the possibility of establishing a regional security outfit to complement the efforts of federal security forces. General Musa assured the governors of the military’s commitment to restoring peace in the region but stressed the importance of community involvement in intelligence gathering and conflict prevention.

The meeting comes amid growing public frustration over persistent attacks on rural communities, with recent weeks witnessing a surge in abductions and deadly raids. Participants reviewed ongoing military operations and explored ways to strengthen the security infrastructure, including deploying more troops and equipment to flashpoints. The governors also raised concerns about the humanitarian crisis caused by mass displacements, calling for federal support to assist affected communities.

While no immediate resolutions were made public, sources indicate that the meeting agreed on regular security briefings between state and military authorities.

The Northwest has remained Nigeria’s most volatile region in terms of security challenges, accounting for over 60% of reported violent incidents in 2025. Observers hope this renewed collaboration between political and military leaders will yield tangible results in restoring stability to the region.
