On Friday, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, hailed his country’s latest missile attacks as a “minimum punishment” for Israel’s “astonishing crimes.”
Khamenei addressed a meeting in Tehran, praising the late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was assassinated by Israeli troops.
Khamenei’s statement occurred three days after Iran launched over 200 missiles at Israel in what it said was vengeance for Nasrallah’s killing.
During his address, Khamenei hailed Nasrallah and expressed support for Hamas and Hezbollah, claiming they provided “vital service to the entire region and the entire Islamic world”.
He stated that Iran-aligned armed organizations “will not back down” in their struggle with Israel, which has entered a new phase after Hamas started deadly assaults into Israel about a year ago.
Iran is the primary supporter of Hezbollah, Hamas, and other armed groups in the Middle East that have fought Israel. They commonly refer to themselves as the “Axis of Resistance”.
In recent weeks, numerous prominent officials of Iran-backed groups and Iran’s formidable military branch, the Revolutionary Guards, have been killed in Israeli attacks or suspected murders.
